LAUNCH Client Saves Syracuse Man's Life

Last week, one of our LIFE program participants and her counselor were in one of our agency vans on a busy road in Syracuse. While they were on their way back to LAUNCH, there was a torrential rainstorm. While at a stop light, they witnessed a man riding his bicycle down a steep side street. Due to the rain and steep hill, the man lost control of his bike and ended up falling and slamming into a guardrail.

The LIFE participant and counselor sprang into action! When the two of them approached the man, they noticed he was in bad shape and that he needed an ambulance. However, he tried to get up because he was worried about his bicycle. When the counselor tried to talk to him, she realized he didn’t speak English, however, the client realized she could talk to him in Vietnamese.

While waiting for an ambulance, the client calmed the bicyclist down and helped translate for the counselor. A passerby also stopped to help. The client told her that the bicyclist was worried about his bike, his only mode of transportation. He didn’t want to go to the hospital and leave his bike. The passerby offered to take his bike to his home for him. Relieved that all was going to be okay, the bicyclist started to calm down and waited patiently for an ambulance.

The counselor and client were heroes that day. If they hadn’t acted as fast as they had, the bicyclist might have ended up in worse shape. We couldn’t be prouder of them!
