This workshop and presentation will include sharing information on school discipline procedures. An overview of the laws and regulations regarding suspensions, superintendent’s hearings and manifestation determination processes of appeals, challenging decisions, and when to seek legal representation will be given.

This part of the presentation will include information on what a functional behavior assessment is as well as what a behavioral intervention plan is and how they are used to support students to attend school and stay in class. Additionally, alternatives to suspension, how to work with students to invest in their own success plan, and how to keep students on track in the future will be discussed.

In the event of inclement weather, if North Syracuse School District and/or OCM BOCES are closed the training will be canceled.

Our Presenters:

Jessica Barlow is a lawyer with Disability Rights New York. She works to advocate for the civil and legal rights of New Yorkers with disabilities both adults and children so that they can freely exercise their own life choices, enforce their rights, and fully participate in their community life.

Allyssa Nicotra is a Special Education Teacher with the Syracuse City School District. She works closely with administrators, teachers, students, and families to create alternatives to suspensions that allow students to stay engaged in their learning and stay in school. Please register using the google link:
